Gary West

Biography

Gary West, born in Danville, Virginia, earned advanced degrees in History and Political Science before completing his law degree and joining the New Orleans firm Gertler, Gertler, & Vincent where he represented workers suffering from occupational lung disease.

In 1989, Gary and his family moved to Newport News, where he joined the law firm Patten, Wornom, Hatten, & Diamonstein and continued to represent workers suffering from occupational lung diseases.  From 2002-2003 Gary worked as a partner handling worker's compensation cases with Rutter & Mills and has been in private practice since.

Gary served as a member of the Newport News Planning Commission from 2001-2008.  He was appointed to the Regulations Committee of Newport News Planning Commission and currently serves as Chairman of that committee.

Gary represented countless shipyard workers and other community members effected by asbestos exposure. While serving on the Newport News Planning Commission, Gary became more aware of the need for good public servants. Gary West’s experience representing others has perfectly prepared him to serve as an effective citizen legislator.
